From Publishers Weekly Browne's experience as managing director of investment firm Tweedy, Browne provides examples to support his lessons on value investing, a method of buying stocks that have fallen in price to earn the best return over the long term.

Browne uses examples from successful investors such as Benjamin Graham, Walter Schloss and Warren Buffet to illustrate that value investing is the best way to make the most of one's investments. The zingy chapters titles "Buy Stocks like Steaks On Sale," "Around the World with 80 Stocks" and "Sifting out the Fool's Gold" are demonstrative of his penchant for metaphors, parables and anecdotes, which make this book as entertaining as it is informative. Browne's short chapters detail useful and time-tested concepts, including the significance of book value, which foreign economies are worth investing in, and who to watch for investment ideas.

With detailed advice and thorough explanations, this book should prove an asset to both professional and amateur investors. All rights reserved. I liked the first few chapters of this book. It featured a well written foreword by Roger Lowenstein and hit home the logic of value investing. Christopher Browne writes well and I zipped through the book in three hours.

However, reading about investors like Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffet and Walter Schloss buying companies at unbelievably low multiples feels like a bygone era. I believe the reason value investing worked so well in the past is because it was so intensive. Before computers, and even calculators, value investors were toiling over balance sheets and running numbers to find the cheapest stocks they could. And the more people do it, the harder it becomes to find those deep value buys that are touted throughout the book.

At the end of the book, Browne admits this point and says the process has to remain dynamic, abandoning metrics like book value and looking at acquisition values instead. I think more of the book should have been devoted to explaining those methods. A succinct, lucid and very well written introduction to value stock investing. The author, a scion of Browne and Tweedy fame, knew all of the major players the world of value investing, people like Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett, Walter Schloss and many others.

Reading and rereading will serve to keep the individual investor on track. The book was published in , but the advice is just as pertinent as ever in , although now the price makes this book an even better value. It is hard to overstate just how well written and organized the book is. Every concept is expressed with commendable clarity. Highly recommend. Great book as an introduction to the principles of value investing as laid out by Benjamin Graham. Very easy to read. With about pages, you can get through this book in a couple of hours.

I'd use this as a warm up book to Intelligent Investor. Excellent book!!!! Thoroughly written with the right level of detail. Especially for a novice investor. Thank you Christopher Browne! Very good book with authors insights and suggestions for stock trading. A very good book. I have been investing for more than 5 years and have been reading many books about Investing.

Let it be Soros's book or Graham's book. This Little Green Book gives us many thoughts and idea of what to do in the stock market. A must have for all investors. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Well written if a bit dated in z. Bottom line is it is compact and has some sound by my reckoning explanations of basic principles. I enjoyed reading this and would recommend it to anyone who is curious and wants a down to earth explanation of what value investing is.

Report abuse. The book is good but there is not charts or even the formulas for calculations. It is just text. If you want, you can read and take notes to memorise everything. Although having only read a few books on investing and finance I can by far say this is the best book I've read. The fact that the author is an actual investor and comes from a lineage of investors with ties to Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffet only authenticates his points even more. Instead of aggressive trading, he emphasizes the virtue of not taking action.

It still blows me away why the most proven investment approach of all time is still so rarely adopted in practice but I think the answer comes down to one word, discipline. Whether the space be investing, personal coaching, relationships, professional sports, the arts or anything else, rock solid determination is what has lead to success beyond what most thought was possible.

As you journey down the road less traveled to success, at times it will seem like everyone wants you to fail or has lost hope in you, and it is then when you find out what true success is made of. This is one of the reasons I love value investing. It is the discipline and ability to swim against the current with complete certainty, despite what others tell you.

Investors are generally afraid of being left behind and like the idea of owning the popular stocks everyone is talking about. This herd mentality impacts everybody be it individual retail investors or professional portfolio managers. The mindset that allows investors to be comfortable losing money as long as everyone else is losing money too. The reputational and career risk of being a contrarian is far greater than the risk of going with the flow in a short term. Value investing requires the ability of going against the herd, and the risk of being called a dummy from time to time.
